FOOTHILL FELINES SERENITY!!

Brown Spotted Leopard Bengal Female!

We get asked all the time about what to expect when adding a young Bengal kitten to a household with an older cat. Elaine and Rita, in Stockton, CA, did just that when they decided to add little Serenity to their family. Currently in residence was their beautiful seal lynxpoint snow Bengal female from us, Akemi, and Elaine and Rita both knew in their hearts that Akemi would be delighted to have a new playmate, but were a bit concerned about the transition stage!! Here is how things went for them. "Hi Holly, just wanted to let you know what is going on with Montana (aka Renny) - well Akemi is still really mad but she is not hurting Montana, she just growls at her. She tries to get close to her and watches her like a hawk, but Montana holds her own she growls back at her. What I wanted to know is the first day Montana was there she ate some of her wet food, but yesterday she didn't want to eat and all she wanted to do is sleep, she did play a little with me but most of the day she wanted to me to hold her and sleep. I tried giving her some food this morning but she just didn't want any, and I am getting a little worried about her. Is this normal? If not what can I do to make her eat, she doesn't drink anything either. She has used the litter box. Thanks so much"

Rita and I e-mailed and phoned back and forth, and we decided to take the introduction of the 2 girls a bit more slowly and gradually, to keep the stress down for everybody. The next day, Rita wrote: "Good news, the baby had some water last night and it looks like Akemi is getting used to the baby. The baby is still not eating, I have been hand feeding her. Today I am going to pick up some baby lamb food for her." And a few days later: "Hi, Holly - just wanted to let you know that I did get the baby lamb food for Montana and she did eat some of it last night, I know she has been drinking because I have seen her drink. Is it ok that she is not eating so much, I am a little worried because she feels so thin. Here are some photo's of Montana and Akemi in the same room, Akemi is always watching her :) I also wanted to let you know I have changed her name again. Now that I have spent more time with her I have changed her name to Serenity (Renny for short)."

We agreed that Rita and Elaine should hand feed little Renny for a few days, to make sure she was getting the nourishment she needed. Between that and providing a more secure and gradual introduction to Akemi, these two Bengals are now fast and close friends, as we knew they would be!! Just a few days later, in fact, Rita wrote again: "I wanted to share with you how my girls are doing! They no longer fight! Akemi doesn't want to be away from the baby, she is even starting to clean her and now they sleep together. They are so cute together; however,Elaine is a little sad because Akemi just wants to be with the baby." I assured Rita and Elaine that now they had TWO babies, and no other person or animal would ever take their place with either Akemi or with Renny. Take a look at the beautiful photos below taken by Rita and Elaine.
