FOOTHILL FELINES SPARKI!!

Sparki, a very spunky top breeder quality marble SBT female Bengal kitten at 9 weeks old!

Sparki picked out her own family when Keith and Sally B. came to visit us in the spring of 1999!! Always extremely intelligent and dominant in her purrr-sonality, Sparki found her way on to Sally's lap for a nap in no time at all, thus securing for herself a wonderful new home and family in the San Francisco Bay area of northern California!!

We have received lots of wonderful update e-mails and letters from Keith and Sally. This special family also includes a rescue kitten (very close in age to Sparki) named, appropriately, Mudpie, and an older indoor/outdoor kitty named Angela, who wasn't quite sure what to think about the two young newcomers at first. Soon after bringing Sparki home, Sally wrote us: "Angela for the first time sat with all of us last night to watch a rented movie, without one growl. I had Sparki on my lap, Angela on Keith's lap, and the Mudpie on the chair next to Keith. It was such an improvement. There is a difference when she shows agitation towards the kittens, vs any stray that should come into the yard. She almost has a motherly way about her. Angela puts her weight on her front legs, slapping the ground close to them to chase kittens away, with a verbal. However, with the strays outside, she screams, chased to hurt the other if caught. So after realizing she is just letting the kittens know their place instead of wanting to hurt them, I was more at ease."

"It is very hard to train the kittens at dinner time, not to get up in our plates. It is because we sit on the floor and use the coffee table for a dining table during our remodeling. Sparki is the first one to attack the dinner at my plate. She knows I am softer about sharing. Mudpie has little interest in people food compared to Sparki. You would swear Sparki is being starved!! So now Sparki will sit in my lap and gently remind me she is ready to be shared with. She uses her hands to nudge me or sits up like a prairie dog!"

Then, a few weeks later, we heard from Sally again: "I just have to tell you what Sparki did Tuesday evening!! On the other side of the wall in our bathroom is the new living room. In the new living room we have set up one of the new cabinets for our temporary pantry. There is an open shelf that has a large tin can containing Angela's dry food. I was in our bathroom brushing my teeth and Mudpie was in the sink as she and Sparki usually are when I am in there. They love to play in the water - both of them. I heard a loud crash that sounded like an empty can falling from the roof. It was very loud. I ran into the new living room looking to see what fell...I just knew Sparki was into something. She somehow opened the large tin can and was sitting in it eating Angela's food! It was so funny, I cried laughing. I carried the can, with her in it...eating uninterrupted to show Keith. He couldn't believe what he saw in the can. I feed her, really I do!! She even gets part of my dinner every night!! I had to take her out, she would not go on her own. Then, when I put the lid back on it she acted all hurt, like I really offended her!!"

And, several months later: "The kids are fine! Sparki will be a year old soon and she is beautiful. She is so easy to train to do little tricks. She gets bored so easily, so when I get home after work each day, we have some time to play before the mad rush to make dinner. After dinner she has the need to play some more. Keith is still working on the house and has not had time to make her tree. But he has made a jungle jim out of both ladders and the two poles he bought for her tree stand. Sparki can now leap up to five feet horizontally (about six feet vertically). She truly is an amazing cat. Poor little Mudpie doesn't have the length in her to make those leaps, but tries real hard. Angela just looks at them "those crazy kids".

"Sparki's personality out-shines any cat I have ever met. I have had quite a few cats in my life. When I get home she greets me at the door and literally tells me about her day. She makes the funniest sounds and noises. I can almost imitate one of her calls. She has a special sound when she is bored or wants something she can't quite get to. She knows where I hide the feather and mouse toys, so she goes to those spots and calls them till I get to it and play with her. (I wish I had a bigger home to get another Bengal, but three cats is a nice number for our home. I told Keith about the new litter you have, he immediately said 'no way!' I could go on about that little wonder Sparki... I am so thankful to enjoy her company. Everyone that has met her has fallen in love with her."   Photos below are by Sally, taken of Sparki (and Mudpie) at 6 months old; last two photos are of Sparki in October 2002, and March 2003.
