FOOTHILL FELINES MARGARITA!!

Margarita at 6 months old, a beautiful glittered spotted Bengal female!

It was another very difficult decision for us here at Foothill Felines, to retire our lovely Margarita, again without having any kittens from her. Due to family constraints and stress, we felt we needed to downsize our cattery a bit, and since we still had both of Margarita's parents (Marshamelo and Michabo) in our program, we were hoping to place Margarita with her close companion Foothill Felines Miami Spice, and we were lucky enough to find the perfect home for them both with Karen Truan and her domestic shorthair cat Cashkaw and F2 neutered male Nkosi, in Michigan. Karen was recovering from shoulder surgery, and was able to be home with her new kitties as they adjusted to their new digs.

Miami and Margarita flew to Michigan in late December 2001, and Karen was wonderful about updating us by phone and e-mail. A few days after their arriva, she wrote: "Miami and Margarita are doing wonderful. I had to go out for a while tonight and when I came home they were both curled up in Cashkaws favorite spots on the bed and Cashkaw was on their leopard blanket on the couch. Miami has taken on escort duties and escorts me around the house. He is definitely a cuddler and much prefers to be under the covers. We have come to an understanding about love bites. As I said earlier today they are both beautiful and I am so glad to have them here." Two days later, we had this update: "I woke up this morning with Miami laying under the covers on my chest and stretched out from my shoulders down to the middle of my thighs. Talk about a long cat. Was very nice and warm though!!" And a few days later: "I thought that I would let you know that everybody here is getting along great. Nkosi has recognized kindred spirits in Miami and Margarita and finally is getting enough playtime that he actually stops and sleeps without being confined. For the past couple of nights I have been able to allow him access to my bedroom while I sleep without having to worry about being bothered. Today I got out the fishing toy and had 3 very frisky Bengals playing with it. They were all on their hind legs and were jumping up and looked like so many pogo sticks. Would have been a great Kodak moment. I have been very impressed with how rapidly they have adjusted to being here. They both already act as if they have been here for weeks!!"

And yes, a few days later we had another report!! "The kids are great. They have found their spots on the top of my kitchen cabinets for naps. They get up and play at around 5am Someone must have bred in a built in clock. Fortunately for me they amuse themselves. Although I have never quite understood how a 10-15 lb cat can sound like a herd of elephants when they are playing. Nkosi is a changed cat. He has calmed down considerably since Spicer and Rita have come. He has his spot on the couch but I have also seen them all sleeping together. My domestic is the odd cat out but it doesn't seem to bother him any. I am so glad to have them now. They brighten up my day greatly." Another week passed and we had this message: "Everybody is doing wonderful, that is except for me. I am so bored I can hardly stand it and no end in sight yet. I love to read but not 24 hours a day. Every other surgery I have had I was back to normal work within days so this is a real trial as you can imagine. Everybody looks at me cross-eyed if I pick up a glass and I keep telling them that litter boxes require 2 hands. Obviously they are not cat owners so they do not really get it. The other night however I did have to feel especially loved as I woke up about 4-5am with a domestic (very large domestic) shorthair on one side and a line of Bengal bodies practically from head to foot on the other. I would have loved to have had a picture but again I am not a magician. Last night Margarita came and laid on my chest as I was reading in bed . I use a 40 watt reading light attached to the headboard so I do not have to get up to turn it off when I am done. In any case the light was hitting Margarita's coat just so and I got a real chance to see exactly what 'glitter' is all about. Kind of looks like someone sprinkled her with gold dust. Nkosi remains a changed boy. I had hoped having a Bengal companion would made him less of a maniac but never expected quite as much change as has occurred. Needless to say I am delighted!!" And so are Miami Spice and Margarita and all of us at Foothill Felines!! Below, Margarita at 7 months old.
